Not Your Grandma’s Wallpaper

Believe it or not, wallpaper is making a come back! I know, I know, I think of that sickly green and gold wall paper in my grandmother’s dining room that was enough to make you want to hurl.  But honestly, with bold prints and fun colors, and more eco friendly options wallpaper is a great way to add some flavor to your room without a huge cost.

There are, however, a few things that you should keep in mind.  First of all, with wallpapering you can never be too bold.  Wallpaper used to be a miniature floral pattern all over your kitchen, but now look for bigger bolder prints.  Some of my favorites that I’ve seen include palm fronds the size umbrellas, or pineapples the size of dinner plates.  Big prints are in!  Secondly, remember that a big bold print doesn’t have to cover everything.  Don’t cover all four walls with it, if there is nothing to break it up. Think a bold print in a bathroom behind the mirror or toilet as an accent where you have the shower to break it up.  In the dining room, think about using a wainscoting to break it up so the pattern is only on half the wall.  In the bedroom, maybe use it as perfect backdrop to your bed, not on all four walls. In the kitchen, use it to line open shelving for a bold pop. It’s a statement, not a wall color.
